The holy grail of tropical permaculture! Jam-packed with nutrients and easy to grow, Moringa is a shrub/tree from southern Asia that many permaculturists consider to be key in fighting malnutrition in poor countries. The leaves, flowers, and pods (when young) are all edible, and have a pea-like, spicy, pungent flavor. They are full of minerals and vitamins (Google it) and can be eaten raw or used in soups, salads, etc. Pods get tough quickly so do pick them young if you plan on consuming them.

Moringa is frost sensitive, but will sprout rapidly from branches or from the roots. This is a fast growing plant that responds well to being cut to the ground annually. Not fussy about water as long as it's not kept bone dry, or waterlogged. It needs a sunny position with good air circulation, but will tolerate a bit of shade. I've seen these growing in the Mojave desert in full, baking hot sun at 120 degrees with nary a complaint. Southwesterners rejoice!

PLEASE NOTE: My plants are grown in biodegradable nursery bags and dry out quickly. Please put a tray underneath them to catch water until they are ready to be planted. The nursery bags need to be removed or cut off before transplanting.
