Mexican Hat seeds, Ratibida columnifera. Native Texas wildflower.

Perennial. Mexican Hat, also referred to as Prairie Coneflower, is a plant with feathery leaves and long leafless stalks bearing flower heads of 3-7 yellow and red-brown, drooping rays surrounding a long, red-brown central disc. Sombrero-shaped flower heads give this plant its common name. Usually 1 1/2 feet tall but can reach 3 feet. Blooms during summer from May to October.

GROWING TIPS:

Mexican Hat is a drought tolerant plant that can withstand competition. It is a fast growing wildflower that tolerates a wide range of soils and is easy to grow from seed. The foliage has a strong odor that repels deer. It can grow aggressively and may push out other weaker species.

This species is very easy to propagate from seed; fall seeding is recommended. Seeds do not require treatment, but may benefit from a period of stratification. Be sure the seed is in good contact with the soil by lightly raking it into loose topsoil.
