Seller's description

Vanity Fair by W. M. Thackeray. University Edition. Published by Hooper, Clarke & Co. Undated.
Rare. Many books from the 1800's and even very early 1900s do not contain a copyright. There is a preface from the author dated 1848, but we cannot rely on this as the copyright. By the looks of it, I would place the copyright of this book in the late 1800's. And it must be rare. Usually I can at least find a copy that is in someone's archives. This edition cannot be found anywhere. At least, not by me. Modestly priced.
According to Wikipedia: [quote] Vanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero is a novel by English author William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in 1847–48, satirizing society in early 19th-century Britain. The book's title comes from John Bunyan's allegorical story The Pilgrim's Progress, first published in 1678 and still widely read at the time of Thackeray's novel. "Vanity Fair" refers to a stop along the pilgrim's progress: a never-ending fair held in a town called Vanity, which is meant to represent man's sinful attachment to worldly things. The novel is now considered a classic, and has inspired several film adaptations, the most recent being the 2004 film starring Reese Witherspoon. In 2003, Vanity Fair was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel". [unquote]
And it is one of my favorite novels, as well. It is definitely in my top ten. Well-written and a bit scandalous. As huge as the following is for Jane Austen, I have always wondered why Austen fans don't venture more often into Thackeray or Trollope.
Although the date of publication is uncertain, this seems to have been printed on good paper--low in acid content--which means there is minimal yellowing. 617 pages. Hardcover in reddish-brown cloth. Gold embossed design on cover. The binding is in fair shape. Some splotches on the back cover. (See photos.) Name written on front fly leaf. Use the ZOOM at the bottom right corner of the photo. Our books ship by Media Mail and the post office says to allow two weeks for delivery, but I find that one week is more typical, except in mid-December.
