This hand cut uranium glass sterling silver ring is a size 7 1/2. I produced this unique vintage design using old, hand working techniques. The motif is a vintage Art Nouveua filagree design. A flower and filagree netting. The design was an original that was reproduced in a solid steel die. I pressed annealed sterling silver into the die with repeated cycles of annealing and trimming. Using tons of pressure, hand controlled, the design was pressed into the silver. Then the piece was trimmed and formed into a ring. I pierced the gallery using hand sawing. This was composed of multiple pieces, each hand crafted and then combined.
The oxidation is a classic patina.
I set a 6 x 8 hand cut and polished uranium glass cabochon. This is how rings were made before casting was routine. Labor intensive, hands-on crafts-person ship. Uranium glass has been doped using uranium oxide at very small amounts. The background radiation is considered safe and is not regulated. About as much, or less radiation as most home electronics produce. Please note that while uranium glass jewelry is considered safe, the buyer assumes all responsibility for the safe handling and wearing of it. In visible light this type is a watery light green, similar to what might have been called Vaseline glass. But under ultraviolet light it glows a bright eerie green. Think of the green fairies of absinthe drinkers.
To be clear, while the active compound is uranium this material does NOT glow in the dark spontaneously. It is not a phosphor and requires UV to reveal this color. That said, in natural sunlight there is sufficient UV that the glass may appear a ghostly light green.
Keep in mind glass is inherently fragile and should be treated with care. A sharp rap or drop may chip or crack it.
I collect vintage glass pieces and the melt, cut and or polish it into reusable/recycled pieces. This cabochon was cut from a late 1800s marble I sliced and shaped on my lapidary wheels.
I do not typically resize rings. But I do consider making other versions in other sizes as special requests.
