The Krupenichka doll is a Slavic household amulet dating back over 1000 years. Traditionally filled with the finest grains or cereals from the fall harvest, she would watch over the household until spring, protecting the family from harm, assuring abundance, and perhaps even bringing good luck. Under her clothing the Krupenichka is crossed with red thread to ward off the evil eye. The charm at her belt is a gift to her, a token of gratitude for her diligent watchfulness. The belt itself is said to be her talisman.
Handmade with natural materials following the ancestral ways of generations before. Traditionally Krupenichka would be made without the use of any needle or cutting of any kind (torn fabric with a beautiful frayed edge is characteristic of these dolls). Any cutting or stitching in my process is accomplished before the official start of the Krupenichka's conception, an acceptable allowance for increasing durability as well as working with new fabrics which do not tear as easily as the well-worn clothing used in times past. Most importantly, the Krupenichka is conceived from start to finish in one sitting, with the dollmaker's thoughts and mood in alignment with the traditional ways.
She is about 4 inches tall and comes with a little card telling a bit about her history and significance.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the women who have welcomed me into their sisterhood of crafting Slavic Motanka dolls. If you find this to be a compelling craft tradition please research the long and fascinating history of Motanka dolls and their meanings. I think you will really enjoy it!
