Each sheet features brilliant colours and all are cut to 8.5 x 11 inches weighing between 70 gsm to 90 gsm. The design is printed on one side and the other side is white.

Interested in the history of chiyogami paper?
Chiyogami, which means thousand generation (chiyo) paper (gami), was developed in Japan during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The fashionable kimono textiles being produced in the Yuzen area of Kyoto inspired the papermakers to produce small-scale paper imitations. Originally intended for use on dolls and tiny household items, every sheet is meticulously produced by hand.

The base paper is a combination of wood pulp and mulberry (kozo) fibres. Mulberry is what gives the paper its strength, pliability and resilience making it so well suited to craft work.

The printing of the elaborate designs is a particularly complex process and often involves 5 to 6 separate colour overlays. Each colour is silkscreened on one by one and the pigments used are fade resistant. The result is a strong, soft and versatile decorative paper with generally consistent colours although slight variations may exist. You’ll find many of the patterns contain symbolic imagery including cranes for long life and plum blossoms and pine boughs for beauty and longevity.
