These samples of fine hand-stitched linen were used by sales persons to show the consumer the various designs that could be worked on the returns of bed and other linens. The orders and specifications would then go to skilled outworkers to fulfill. All hand work is precise and expertly done and the linen is fine quality with a silky floppy hand. They would be lovely framed, worked into pillows or perhaps used as cafe curtains. French, 1910 - 1920.

This piece has extensive ladder work surrounding satin stitch squares and is approx. 61 cm by 53 cm (24” x 20.75”). Fine floppy linen. Two unfinished edges, One wide hem finished with ladder work, one narrow plain hem.

Small diamond crochet embroidery medallions are intersected by cut-work lines in this piece and it measures approx. 60 cm by 48 cm (23.5” x 19”). Medium-fine floppy linen. One selvage edge and one unfinished edge. One wide hem finished with ladder work, one narrow plain hem. Some flaws along the salvage edge. There is a pencil mark and a very faint storage discolouration along a fold line which I think should wash out over time.

*C* SOLD
The piece with the large central satin stitch diamond shape intersected by triple cut-work lines is approx 58.5 cm (23”) square. Fine floppy linen that is a soft griege colour which sets the white embroidery off beautifully. One selvage edge and one unfinished edge. One wide hem finished with ladder work, One narrow plain hem. Some small flaws along the salvage edge.

These are clean but have been stored for a while and would benefit from a nice soak.
