The Preacher - Jigsaw
The year 2004 is a very special year for all horror movie fans. Besides some of the classics such as The Grudge, Anacondas, and The Machinist, we saw the birth of an amazing horror franchise! It all started when James Wan and Leigh Whannell had an idea and a unique take on horror, which subsequently became one of the best cult classics of all time. The first SAW instalment, despite having a relatively tight budget, terrified the audience like nothing before. With its intriguingly interwoven storylines, unique shooting style, and of course, deadly traps, it found its own way of inciting fear even after the movie was over.
Although the Antagonist - Jigsaw (played by Tobin Bell) had very little screen time in the first chapter, no doubt he left an impression on many of us. The Preacher is inspired by his debatable, or some might say twisted perspective of life and death. "The will to live" as he preaches, is what adds depth to the movie. "Killing is distasteful" as we later found out how much he despises murder, yet did his victims deserve to go through what he had planned for them to rehabilitate, to cherish life? To me, the character Jigsaw signifies a moral judge who truly believes the conventional ways of doing will not do justice in modern society but only through his/her game. Is Jigsaw merely the psychopath under a mask or is the mask we all wish to put on at some point...
