This bedazzling cup began its life as a one-pound wad of clay. It was thrown to form on my pottery wheel. While freshly thrown, still spinning ever-so-slowly, I added a layer of slip to the exterior surface. This slip is simply a more liquid form of the same stoneware clay body from which I throw. Gathered in my hand, I gently apply the slip to the form, and create an undulating, dimensional texture using a plastic and/or metal rib. This provides glazes with an opportunity to speak for themselves while still complementing the pot.

The glaze applied to this cup is a combination of glazes I like to call Breaking Tide. On the surface, it reminds me of an aerial view of waves ebbing and flowing on a beach. Observing the glaze in good lighting is sure to entice your senses as it comes to life with a glossy, glittering shimmer. It's entertaining to study, and truly beautiful to behold. If you enjoy the beach and ocean, you're sure to fall in love with this beauty!

To add a personal, unique touch to each of my forms, I add a few surface embellishments. One being a capital, cursive Z as my maker's mark, and the others being created by found objects. I roll a tiny wad of clay between my fingers, pressing it against the exterior wall after trimming. As a final step in my making process, I polish the foot of each vessel to ensure its stability. Doing so may also help prevent the transfer of scratches to sensitive surfaces around the home, or office.

I recommend enjoying cold, or slightly warm beverages from a cup such as this. As ceramics are quite thermodynamic, the heat from a hot beverage may make the cup a bit uncomfortable to grasp. There's so much to enjoy: cocktails, wine, whiskey, bourbon, water, spritzers, rum; whatever your heart desires.
