"Bay Rampart"
Original 30x40 inch (76x111 cm) oil on linen canvas painting by famous Eastern Canadian artist George Noseworthy painted in 1978. This amazing one of a kind piece was created by George when he was inspired by the cliffs found on the coastline near Clark's Beach, Newfoundland.
Created with quality Rembrandt oils and hand stretched Belgian linen canvas stapled by the artist himself. The painting ships with an exquisite polished stainless steel frame and will be ready to hang when it arrives as a showpiece for your collection.
This is an original, handmade, one of a kind work of art. It is signed and thumb-printed on the back with an original certificate of authenticity signed by George Noseworthy himself as well as a hand written thank you note from his son, James.
---------------------
George Noseworthy, referred to by Time Magazine as, “The Pied Piper of Hibb’s Cove,” was born in the Bronx, New York, on July 24, 1929. The middle child of five, he was quiet, shy and showed an early talent for drawing. After graduating from high school he studied at the New York State University institute of Applied Arts and Science during the day, graduating in the top ten of his class, and in the evenings he studied at The Art Students League, working alongside greats such as Norman Rockwell.
Upon completion of his studies George worked for the next few years as a commercial artist/art director, for major advertising agencies and book publishers. In 1962, he became an Art Director for Scholastic Magazine in Manhattan, NY, where he remained until he visited Newfoundland in 1966 on his vacation. An entry taken from his diary describes his first impression of the island…”Everything we encountered, especially the landscape, was like something you would only dream about, and our excitement mounted over the prospect of vacationing in such a wonderland.”
So enchanted by the island, George ended up settling in the small fishing village of Hibb’s Cove where he painted everything he saw: the fishing boats, fishermen, fish-flakes, the ocean, and the faces of the children. These works sold almost as quickly as he could paint them. But then slowly his art began to change, and his new work he called “Rhythmics.” The once pretty landscapes became magnificent sweeping vistas; clouds became moving swaths of color. Gone were the quaint views, as George tried to capture the very essence of nature itself: always moving; ever vibrant. The critics of the time felt he succeeded.
“Noseworthy’s colorful, swinging canvasses capture in powerful images the spirit, energy, and majesty of his coastal environment. His surfaces are smooth and shiny, as if seen through the cold bright light of the Artic. He is as his expressive best, with only the power of the Earth herself to move him.”
- Art Post, 1985
During his 19 years in Newfoundland he produced 460 oil paintings, two journals, three diaries, hundreds of sketches, 32 art exhibits, 18 of which were one man shows; five children’s art and music centers, where supplies and lessons were free to all, and a Fishermen’s Museum, the first Museum outside of the capitol of St. John’s. In 1970, George boarded the Percy M. Crosbie as it left for the north Atlantic off Labrador in the search for seals. He is the only artist to have gone on a seal hunt and painted “the hunt” as it happened. The 43 paintings that resulted from that experience are part of the permanent collection today in the Home from the Sea Memorial in Elliston, Newfoundland. The remainder of his work exists today in private and public collections across Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Europe, and Japan.
George died at his home in Newfoundland, on September 14, 1985 at the age of 56.
