宇宙の夜 [uchū no yoru] "Cosmic Night" design. Combination of two patterns - 麻の葉 [asanoha] hemp leaf and geometric shapes made in "one stroke" technique. Asanoha is a traditional geometric pattern based on a regular hexagon, a shape similar to a hemp leaf. Hemp plant has strong vitality and can grow without much care. In Japan “asa-no-ha” pattern is used on a wide variety of objects, symbolizing strength and healthy growth, and giving protection from harm and evil spirits.

All Miwa Temari products are handmade in Tokyo by an advanced level temari master (高等科) certified by Japanese Temari Association (日本手まりの会). Artist's stamp and signature is pinned to temari.

This temari is made following traditional technique - dried and disinfected rice hulls are used for the core, no plastics or styrofoam. High-quality Japanese silk is used for both embroidery and base wrap.

ABOUT TEMARI:
Temari is an ancient Japanese folk art form. 手まり [temari] - “te” means hand, and “mari” means ball-shaped. Around 1000 years ago people in Japan started playing with temari balls made of rice hulls, worn-out fabric and left-over threads. In the early Edo Period (1603-1867), noble women, skilled in needlework, stitched their temari with beautiful silk threads, and developed more elaborate geometric patterns. Gradually, temari evolved into objects of art and highly valued gifts.
