Hendricus Nicolaas (Henk) Dekker was born in Gouda in 1897. He later lived and worked in The Hague. He also died here in 1974. Henk Dekker mainly formed himself. He did receive instructions from H.J. van der Weele and painted, drawn and watercolored in a naturalistic style, harbor views, marines and beach and dune views, along Dutch art and along the Mediterranean Sea in Morocco, Brittany, Belgium, England and Sweden. He was a member of the Dutch Art Circle and taught Cor van Heusden in Rotterdam. In his old age, Henk Dekker could often be found in places where the vagaries of nature show themselves at their best: on the boulevards and piers along the North Sea, including Scheveningen and Hoek van Holland, the South Holland and Zeeland islands. He enjoyed drawing the scarce, picturesque city harbors along the water banks. Works by Henk Dekker can be found in all parts of the world. He is particularly well known in Belgium; he has often exhibited by invitation in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège and St. Niklaas. In recent years his paintings have attracted great interest in the United States of America.
The artist was often found in places where the vagaries of nature are at their best; on the boulevards and piers along the North Sea, including Scheveningen and the corner of Holland, the South Holland and Zeeland islands. He still likes to draw the scarce, picturesque city harbors along water banks.
