This is a fantastic antique brooch over 100 years old. It was purchased in London. The brooch appears to be made from tortoise shell or pressed horn. It has been inlaid with mother of pearl to form an abbey or castle. We don't know which building it represents. The back has been crudely engraved but it is difficult to read what was written as it appears to be in Welsh.
Condition of brooch is excellent considering the age. The back has some striations to the material but no breaks or cracks, no chips along the edges or missing pieces of mop.
Pinback works great-it has the old C clasp and the pinback extends a bit beyond the brooch which is typical for brooches of this age. They were meant to be pinned to the fabric and then stuck back in to secure the brooch.
Measures 1 1/4" wide and 1 3/4" long.
