The earliest known use of Balm of Gilead dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was used to treat a variety of skin conditions. Balm of Gilead was then brought to the Americas by European settlers in the 16th century. Native Americans quickly adopted the use of Balm of Gilead in their own traditional medicine practices. As the cosmetics industry grew, this treasure was credited with having marvelous powers in promoting health and beauty among women in the late 1700’s when it reached its peak of popularity.

Both the oil and tincture were used extensively by both sides during the Civil War to treat wounded soldiers. In the 1881 poem called The Great Physician by George Rundle Prynne, Balm of Gilead is the “One Balsam alone can remove our soul’s sickness, Cure all our diseases and soothe all our pain, One Balm has the virtue to calm all our troubles, And give us back health, joy and comfort again.”

We suggest adding at a rate of 1/2 teaspoon per 16 oz of lotion, face and massage oils. This can vary depending on your ingredients, however starting with a few drops mixed into a half ounce provides a good base for application.
