Squash bees are small bees native to North and Central America, where they nest in the ground and pollinate the flowers of the Cucurbita (squash and gourd) family. Both males and females visit the flowers, but males can often be found napping inside the flower as the day goes on—and then waiting for early morning visits from female bees the following morning. Squash bees are important pollinators of squash, pumpkins, gourds and zucchini, so if you see them in your garden, welcome them with open arms!
