Vintage Hungarian copper wall relief featuring a stylized peacock surrounded by flowing abstract foliage, dating from the 1960s–1970s.

The image is worked in repoussé copper, with the design raised from the reverse and further detailed from the front. Polished copper surfaces contrast with deeply patinated recessed areas, including areas of natural green verdigris. The long patterned tail and strongly outlined body give the composition a particularly graphic quality.

The relief remains in its original simple wooden frame, which complements the warm copper surface.

Provenance: This relief was acquired directly from the daughter of the Hungarian artist, together with two other copper reliefs by the same hand. The three works share the same period framing, materials and distinctive repoussé technique. The artist’s name is currently unknown, so the piece is offered without attribution.

The reverse is left exposed and clearly shows the hand-worked construction of the relief.

Date: 1960s–1970s
Origin: Hungary
Material: Copper, wood
Technique: Hand-worked repoussé / embossed copper relief

Dimensions including frame:
34.5 × 24.5 cm
13.6 × 9.6 in

Condition:
Good vintage condition with age-related surface wear, scratches and patination to the copper and visible wear to the wooden frame. The variations and green oxidation are part of the naturally aged metal surface. Please review the photographs closely, including the reverse.

The copper bird is exactly as described and really beautiful. We were kept updated at all times on the progress of it's transport by Patricia. The parcel was very securely packaged, and promptly delivered. Would highly recommend BudapestVintageShop.
