I’ve witnessed astonishing transformations when sharing my perfumes with friends and family—at times, it felt as though we were each wearing completely different fragrances! Why Natural Over Synthetic?

My journey with fragrance has led me to become increasingly disenchanted with synthetic perfumes and the industry that mass-produces them. After experiencing the depth, complexity, and soul that nature has to offer, synthetic fragrances often feel flat and uninspired. They seem engineered to appeal to the masses, following trends rather than true artistry, and are driven by a commercial machine more concerned with marketing than the actual perfume experience.

When you purchase a synthetic perfume, a significant portion of what you’re paying for is the packaging and marketing, with the actual perfume materials making up a tiny fraction of the cost. Synthetic oils are inexpensive, but they dominate the fragrance industry, leaving little room for the rich and diverse aromas that nature provides.

Personally, I’ve found that synthetic perfumes can be overwhelming and even unpleasant. Spending time at perfume counters in big box stores often results in headaches, with the intense, synthetic musks overpowering the air and hijacking the balance of aromas. In public spaces, a single person’s heavy synthetic perfume can dominate the environment, making it difficult for others to enjoy their surroundings.

That said, I don’t completely dismiss the use of synthetics. When used safely, tastefully, and in moderation, they can be valuable tools for a perfumer. Perfume is, after all, an art, and I respect those who create with genuine care and intention. However, I struggle to respect perfumers who rely solely on formulas created on a computer, driven by market trends rather than a love of scent. Creating a perfume without smelling it along the way strips the magic from an inherently magical art.

For me, the heart of perfumery lies in the connection to nature and the artistry of crafting a scent that evolves, tells a story, and resonates on a deeper level. That’s why I choose to work with natural ingredients—because they offer a richness and authenticity that synthetic perfumes simply can’t replicate.

Natural Perfume vs. Synthetic Perfume:

It’s important to remember that natural perfumes work differently from synthetic ones. The longevity and projection of the scent are governed by nature rather than the lab, meaning that some of the more volatile notes may dissipate more quickly. You may find that you need to reapply your natural perfume more often to refresh those fleeting top notes. This is part of the charm and authenticity of natural fragrances, offering a true connection to the natural world.

Remember, we often acclimate to the scents we wear, so keeping a small container for reapplication throughout the day can offer a little aromatherapy boost and a joyful, meditative moment with yourself.

A Note About Visible Sediment:

Any visible sediment in this perfume is the result of natural fragrance materials. Benzoin is a very thick gum resin that doesn’t always fully dissolve in the solid perfume base during the melting process. I do filter most of the remaining sediment but it is still very likely that some sediment may remain. Enjoy the visual curiosity as the benzoin resin continues to extract its sensuous scent into the balm.

Instructions:

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Use your finger to gently warm the surface of the perfume balm until a small amount melts, making it easier to pick up and apply. Alternatively, you can gently scrape the top with the back of your nail to gather a larger amount. Gently rub the perfume onto desired areas of the skin, such as the neck, wrists, or chest. Avoid applying to sensitive skin, mucous membranes, and the face due to the high concentration of fragrance materials. Be aware that certain natural perfume ingredients may stain materials and clothing.
