Please read the following in full before starting your steaming journey. And note that the plants are not a one size fits all. You may find that some work for your body’s needs, and others might not.
List of things you need to get started:
• Yoni steam herbs, roughly an ounce. Note: The 1 oz. blend yields 1-2 steams, and the 4 oz. yields 4-5. Each steam should use roughly an ounce, though you can stretch it if you’d rather use about half an ounce.
• 6-8 cups of Water
• A medium-sized pot with a lid. If you plan to use your toilet as the seat for the steam, make sure the pot can fit in the toilet. Or, have a metal or ceramic bowl that can fit in the toilet ready to go. Do not use a glass bowl, as the heat from the water can potentially cause it to crack.
• 1 Big towel or blanket
• Optional: candles, incense, aromatherapy, music, crystals, and/or anything you need to facilitate a sense of sanctuary and peace.
Instructions:
- Pour 6-8 cups of water into a pot.
- Place your pot on your stove/cook top and turn the heat to medium, bringing the water to a simmer or soft boil.
- Shake up the bag of herbs before opening to ensure even distribution of the herbs. Then, add the loose herbs or a tea infuser containing the herbs to the pot.
- Cover and let the herbs simmer for a few minutes. Then stop the heat.
- Let the herbs cool for roughly five minutes as you prepare your space for steaming. See the list of recommended things you will need to create a calm environment.
- Bring the pot to your toilet or chosen yoni steam site (see the list of alternatives), and if it fits in your toilet, place it in there so that it sits flat. If it does not fit or if you prefer to use a bowl, place the bowl inside of the toilet and gently pour the tea into the bowl.
- Test the temperature of the steam. It should feel hot but warm and producing a visible steam.
- Once you are ready, sit down on the seat (See the list of alternatives if you do not use the toilet). Please your towel or blanket (I recommend a blanket) over your waist and thighs. Keep yourself warm, wearing something on your feet, such as socks or slippers. Warm your neck especially.
- Then, relax and receive. I recommend not using your phone, except to play music, if that suits you.
- *Steam no longer than 30-40 minutes. Limit to 10-15 minutes, if:
o This is your first time steaming. See how your body responds first before lengthening the time.
o You typically have shorter cycles, 26 days or fewer.
o You are prone to bacterial, herpes, or yeast infections (There are also special blends available that target this. Just ask!)
o You are younger than 18.
o You experience mid-cycle spotting or spontaneous bleeding.
If you do not have these sensitivities, you can steam up to 30-40 minutes.
- Once you are done steaming, you can empty the contents of the bowl or pot into the toilet as a symbol gesture of releasing all that no longer serves you.
*Tip: Plant medicine teaches us the importance of set and setting. If you see the plants as a pharmaceutical quick fix, you are blocking the deeper root healing these plants want for you. Invite this holistic energy in by honoring yourself: Create a calm, relaxing space for yourself (setting) and cultivate a receptive outlook that welcomes all forms of healing (mindset).
Also, keep in mind that an emotional and/or physical release after steaming may be part of your experience, so allow yourself the time and space to move through this. It’s best to steam before bed so that you can rest afterward.
Alternatives to using a toilet:
- If you do not plan to use your toilet as your yoni steam seat, you can squat over the pot or bowl. But this takes effort. However, some suggest this practice feels more primal and grounding. There are also yoni steam seats available online. Some of them boil the water for you. I personally think the toilet is the most convenient option, though all options have their perks.
When to steam/How often:
There is no prescribed number of times to steam. If you are in your reproductive years, and if this is your first time steaming, I recommend steaming once before your cycle starts and potentially once after the bleeding has ceased. If you are not in your reproductive years, I still recommend starting slowly.
After you have learned how your body reacts to the herbs, ideally after one or two sessions, you may decide you’d like to steam more frequently. The reasons for this are personal and may depend on the severity of the imbalances you are trying to address. Or, you may enjoy the ritual of steaming and want to do it more frequently. Regardless of your reasons, you are free to determine how often you’d like to steam. If you are in your reproductive years, you may steam before and after your menses. I recommend one-three times before the bleeding begins and one-three times after it has stopped. If you are trying to conceive, do not steam after you have ovulated. If you are not trying to conceive, you may steam all month, except for during active bleeding.
Contraindications:
Pregnancy
During menstruation (Steam before and after bleeding.)
If you are trying to conceive and have already ovulated for the month; wait to see if cycle starts again, and then resume steaming.
Those who use an IUD or implant for birth control
Remove any piercings from area.
Your yoni is irritated or has active sores
If you have had any of the following procedures: Endometrial Ablation, Tubal Cauterization, Essure, and the patch hormonal birth control. Steaming can cause the reversal of these procedures. If you are using any of these methods of birth control, please back them up before steaming.
Safety and Potential Side Effects
Do your own research. Yoni steaming is proven through generations of women to improve feminine wellness on many levels, but it is still important that you empower yourself with as much information on this as you deem necessary before trying steaming.
Steaming can improve fertility. So, if you are sexually active and in your reproductive years but not hoping to conceive, be aware that this can improve your fertility.
Yoni steams are pH balancing, but few women may experience the opposite effect, as it throws off their pH. This is why it is important to start off slowly so that you can determine how your body responds. If a steam disrupts your pH balance and you experience irritation, it is recommended that you either do not steam or contact me about a blend that is specifically targets bacterial support.
Be careful about the temperature of the water, as steam can cause burns. Again, feel the temperature with your hand. It should be warm, not hot.
A steam can temporarily increase menstrual flow with more dark fluids or old blood. Your period may start earlier than usual, and this is due to a cleansing effect.
Some people experience cervical discharge after a steam. You may also spot after a steam, though it should not be fresh, bright red blood, unless if you are menstruating. It may have an odor but should not be strong. The steam facilitates a cleansing, and it may result in these fluids.
Expected Length of Time to See Results:
Dedicate two to five months to balance menstrual cycle issues and/or other concerns. Other factors, such as lifestyle, stress level, diet, and nutrition should be considered alongside yoni steaming. Holistic healing is deeper than just symptom management and instead targets the root of imbalances to promote overall wellness.
