Where are the crystals sourced?

They're all mined straight from the Grenville province- which includes local deposits in Ontario, Quebec, and New York. Some notable exceptions (ex. Thunder Bay amethyst) occur in adjacent formations. We generally specialize in minerals of the Central North-East of North America (but that's sort of a mouthful).

Are the crystals treated in any sort of way?

All crystals have been cleaned (some better than others) but no harsh chemicals are used unless necessary, and are monitored as to not alter the specimen in any meaningful way. Remember, these things come from the dirt.

Are the crystals sustainably sourced?

All of Niagara 17's crystals have been self-mined by hammer and chisel or small mechanical equipment on personal expeditions, we ensure that local geology is kept as is, we just take the scraps.

Other than the obvious, crystals should generally be kept out of direct sunlight especially known troublemakers like fluorite, amethyst, etc. which are coloured by ions concentrated in their crystal lattice. These ions can break apart with the energy the sun beams at them 24/7. Don't freak out about it too much though, I'll always let you know if its anything serious.

Unlike mushroom collecting, rocks don't grow back (at least not in the time span I'm here), there may be multiple drops for different expeditions or while I'm cleaning a certain item, although its best to assume that once its gone, it's gone! Still, don't fret to ask!

We will always give you what's local, untreated and raw from the earth. Just as mother nature intended. There will be no fluff, no middlemen, meaning all you see here has a story to tell, one that can continue with you.

Handpicked by Niagara17
Vintage from before 1700
Materials: copper impurities, celestine, limestone

These Crystals of Orange Celestite / Celestine are thought to be the only ones of their kind in the world. Caledon, specifically, the Forks of the Credit River, have been producers of such material on the margin of dolostone and sandstone layers in the Niagara Escarpment. The Orange colour is thought to be sourced from inclusions of copper within the crystal, and those who see the occurrence in person would even note associated green blebs of malachite.

Historically, Celestine is mined as a source of strontium, used to produce red colour in fireworks.

Spiritually, orange celestine is believed to promote tranquility, enhanced communication with higher realms, and spiritual growth. It is traditionally linked to the throat and crown chakras. The name celestine is a latin term meaning "of the sky", and was attributed to the mineral upon its discovery in Pennsylvania due to its light blue colour and its chatoyant nature.
