Tamora Pierce wrote all 732 pages of Alanna's tale in The Song of the Lioness as an adult novel, but advice from a friend and first agent had her working on making it a young adult series instead. It is a masterful book that would inspire many, and any modern depictions of lady knights would always bring us back to this book in such a positive way.

There are 6 book series that share the fantasy setting of Tortall, one of the country's in American fantasy author Tamora Pierce's works: The Song of the Lioness, The Immortals, Protector of the Small, Tricksters, Beka Cooper (The Hunt Records), and the Numair Chronicles. Though this design in particular (as it is custom) does not feature the latter.
