This is a fantastic vintage chest, or antique trunk. I spotted it at an estate sale in Western Massachusetts. I believe it's a vintage costume trunk to hold a hat and costumes. Markings on one side are for Albert A. Redner, Washington Cmdy' , which may be for a comedy company, Hartford, Connecticut. The inside has two compartments with a flip top. Under the flip top is a label for Ames Sword Company, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Perhaps it was a sword container, but I believe it was used as a costume storage box. It has a leather covering.

Albert A. Redner was a prominent figure in Hartford’s theatrical and production scene during the late 19th century. Specializing in costume design and production for stage performances, Redner operated under the label "Washington Comedy." His workshop became renowned for its high-quality theatrical costumes, which were tailored to meet the demands of local and touring theatrical troupes. Redner’s contributions to the arts scene in Hartford played a vital role in supporting the burgeoning theater industry in Connecticut during this era.

Ames Sword Company, was a prestigious manufacturer based in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Founded in 1834, the Ames Sword Company initially gained fame for producing military swords and firearms during the 19th century. The company later diversified, crafting a range of high-quality metal goods, including decorative hardware and specialized fittings for trunks and chests. Their work was highly regarded for its durability and aesthetic appeal, often sought after by craftsmen like Albert A. Redner for use in their bespoke creations.

This leather trunk is more than just a practical storage piece—it is a relic of theatrical history and a fine example of collaboration between skilled artisans from Connecticut and Massachusetts. Its enduring quality and design make it a remarkable collectible for theater enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

There's some definite wear and tear from age and use. Specifically, the latch on the front does not clasp firmly into place. There's also some peeling and chipping on the leather covering. It's an amazing piece and would look really great as a coffee table, or used as a storage trunk or just an accent piece in a vintage theme room. I tried to show the overall condition in my photos and video, but please feel free to reach out with any questions or additional photos.
