These earrings feature the copepod Acontiophorus scutatus. There are over 12,000 species of these aquatic crustaceans. To learn more about the original image and the jewelry piece, please visit BlueBeehiveStudio.com.
The earrings began as large sheets of copper that has been cut, sanded, and hole punched into the final shape. The metal then undergoes various stages before enamel is applied, including a vigorous washing and coating one side with clay before the first side is enameled. After the first side is enameled (which becomes the backside of the earring), the front side is prepped again for multiple layers of enamel. Lastly, the final image was printed using colored glass on a special transfer film. This film was then cut to shape, and soaked and transferred to the enameled piece. Fired over 7 hours, the image is fused onto the piece. After another sanding and washing, a Sterling silver ear wire, darkened with a patina, is attached.
Each piece is created by hand and therefore will vary slightly.
