25-Pack Mary Washington Asparagus Live Green Plant Plugs (Not Just Asparagus Crowns) Seedlings Perennial Fruits & Vegetables Plant Emerald Green

Mary Washington Asparagus are perennial vegetables that produce for fifteen to twenty years with increasing yields over time.

Plants or Crowns? - You will find many people selling asparagus crowns and that’s just fine, crowns work just fine, but why not get a jump on the season by planting green vegetative plants? Our plants have been enclosure grown in optimal temperatures and lighting to maximize root development.

Plugs Give You Options - Each of our asparagus plugs have multiple plants growing inside. Because of this, you have the option to separate plants or to leave them in plug form. To separate the plants, take the plugs, rinse off the soil and plant each asparagus plant on its own(giving you many small asparagus plants), or you can simply plant the entire plug for a more dense root system.

Asparagus naturalizes. That means that these plants slowly spread by crown division, giving you higher and higher yields each year. An asparagus crown is the perennial root structure that lives year to year. As the crown grows older, it becomes larger, producing larger asparagus each year until maturity.

Asparagus grown at home is the best tasting...you don’t even have to cook it...it tastes like fresh garden peas straight from the pod! Amazing! Your kids may eat it before it makes it to the table! Unlike asparagus from the store, these tasty tips don’t even have to be cut, but easily snap off in your hand making it an easy veggie to send small children after.

Asparagus is very low maintenance. If you get moderate and predictable rainfall, you may never need to water your asparagus. If you live where it’s dry, moderate watering is required, but mulching can help keep water where you need it.

Asparagus is a drought-tolerant plant! As climate variations continue, planting vegetables that provide great nutrition while maintaining low water usage is very important. Asparagus give us their best early in the year, then simply need maintenance watering to allow the roots/crowns to grow bigger for the next year.

Asparagus stalks made great compost in the fall. Please keep your asparagus stalks as part of your carbon farming/compost/mulching program. These stalks are fibrous and break down a bit slower than grass, providing your mulch with another grade of decomposition quality. The quality of your compost/mulch depends on having various sizes and densities of compostable material. Because of this, asparagus stalks, whole or ground can become an integral part of your composting program.

Asparagus have tenacious root systems that can anchor the soil in place. If you have an incline that appears useless, plant asparagus!!! If you're buying from us, simply take the plugs and rinse off the soil from the root ball and you will see all the individual plants. Plant these about 8 to 12 inches apart and they will colonize that bank and you're erosion problems will be over. They won't look like much the first year, but they will love the space and will spread.

My grandparents in Salida, Colorado didn’t grow asparagus, but they sure did harvest asparagus! The twelve or so feet between their fence and the road formed a bit of a run-off ditch and whether on purpose or just by chance, asparagus grew throughout this area. My grandfather kept this area mowed, but that didn’t stop the asparagus from coming up every day and it sure didn’t stop me from picking. That was just one more reason I loved visiting them! If you have kids or grandkids, creating a space for them to marvel at nature and eat straight from the garden can be a bit magical.

What’s in the Box? - This box will contain 25 plugs of quadruple planted Mary Washington Asparagus ready to plant. Each plug is bagged with a twist tie to make sure each plug remains hydrated. There are also planting directions and our farm story.

Your Purchase Will Do Great Things! - My name is Christopher J. Brenner and I'm starting a U-pick blueberry farm in Wellford, South Carolina...Tip-Top Berry Farms LLC to be exact. The land is bought and the survey is done. Next, it’s time to clear the first acre and put power and water on the property. Your asparagus purchase will help ensure that these things take place in 2022 and that generations to come are able to experience the u-pick berry farm!

Clearing the first acre, “Acre One”, as I call it will allow us to get the ball rolling out at the property. On that first acre, we’ll plant a pumpkin patch and get set up for pumpkin sales next October. There are only so many pumpkins that can be grown on one acre, so we will have to bring some in, hopefully from Frey Farms of Sarah Frey fame. Getting the pumpkin sales started will allow the public to see the farm as a local retail area and will segway nicely into Christmas tree sales in December. We’re going to start the Christmas tree business small (probably 200 trees) and just get the feel for the business the first year. Once these endeavors become profitable, they become the springboard for clearing more acreage and finally planting blueberries for the u-pick local market. I know that we’re playing long ball and that I could just go get a loan and plant the berries, but I believe that the struggle is worth it and by providing the community with a local pumpkin patch and Christmas tree retailer, we keep business in-town where the money will be reinvested over and over. Thank you for your purchase and hope you’ll watch as Tip-Top Berry Farms grows and flourishes.
