2023 growing notes: Well, been awhile since I grew these great sweeties and was shocked to see the last listing date was 2017 (long overdue, but hey I can't grow only so many peps and keep them isolated for seed purposes.) Great crop as usual with healthy plants started from 2017 saved seed with the outcome of fresh 2023 seed. Kinda funny because the 6 year old dwindling seed stock provided about 80% germination and the new seed has a 10% upgrade to 90.6 %. These sweet peppers are highly prized by restaurants and are favorites among chefs. Most often picked and utilized green for fine culinary purposes. For mature seeding purposes all of mine were allowed to fully ripen red. Outstanding pepper either way, in fact they are even sweeter when red :o)

2016 notes:
These renowned peppers are basically the Japanese equivalent to the Padron. Two main differences are the grooved wrinkled pod that has about half the diameter of the Padron yet they are sweeter. I grew these way out in the middle of nowhereville in 8 gallon bags with 5 foot fencing surrounding each pot. One day on water boy duties I noticed something had been knawing the heck out of my largest beloved Shishito plant. The fencing does not have big enough holes for those hooved bastards (deer) to stick their stupidazz snozz in, and unless they are now using stilts, then they must be sticking their big fat schleping cow tongue in there and pulling it into their stupid bucky-toothed cud chewing yaps. Well, I could always wire it with 220 volts, nah that is too far to run wire, besides I would forget about it and nobody would find me till the buzzards were circling. Decided on more mothballs and was placing them at the base when a small movement caught my eye. Got to be kidding me, right there was the culprit, (not that the deer still don't deserve every foul adjective I can conjure up) great big fat 4" long tomato worm that abruptly morphed into a green glop of goo under my boot. I have had them gobble up peppers in years past but always assumed they migrated from a tomato for a change of taste. Well, that theory is clearly incorrect because there is not a tomato plant within hundreds of yards. I mention this whole bit of nonsense because over the season they attacked a dozen or more pepper plants and if you don't catch them quick they will all but destroy the pepper plant much quicker than any tom- and yes they even eat the fruit. Fortunately I caught them early in their pepper dining exploits. They will even attack the hot peppers. I was searching for one on a Moruga Scorpion plant, 3 or 4 of the peppers had big gaping tell tale holes chewed in them and I was getting a bit ticked that I could not find it. Finally I gave up and while watering I noticed this black thing looking like a giant toad turd in the top of the pot and just burst out laughing. Apparently Mr. Moruga's spiciness was a bit more than it could handle.
To sum things up, you're going to be plenty pleased with these peppers.

My best, J
