Sold by the ounce (28g). The silk lap pictured is 3oz (84g) and is approximately 12“Wx4’L and will be cut crosswise (widthwise) to the weight ordered. If ordering 2 or more ounces it will be cut crosswise in 1 piece.
Imported this silk lap comes in approximate 4' x 4' soft loose sheets; weighing approximately 1.1 pounds. When I dye the silk lap I cut it into 1/4lb pieces for easier handling. They are dyed using professional acid based dyes in colorways I have designed myself; inspired by Nature's palate and beauty. You can find additional silks and fibers in my store with the same colorways.
This lap was dyed in my "Paradise Fish" colorway as shown in the photos. Orange, turquoise, purple and black with areas of white. These 4' long pieces are folded to fit into the pan for dyeing. The dye penetrates each layer with the innermost layers being a lighter shade than the outer layers. I try my best to take accurate pictures of the colors but some monitors may display them differently. The lap was left in the dye bath until all color was exhausted then rinsed to remove any residual dye; however, as with any dyed product – care should be taken when wet felting or washing. COLD water wash only.
The silk lap can be thick and thin in spots with wonderful texture hiding between the layers and will usually need teasing apart to work with first. Made up of these multiple layers of fibers, it can easily be peeled, thus allowing one to get very thin layers with which to work. The layers are not always evenly laid out and may be folded onto and over each other. Spread and stretch the layers to create a spiderweb and add textural effects to your designs.
Mulberry silk comes from the Bombyx Mori moth which feeds on mulberry leaves. This diet creates a very soft high luster white silk. Silk laps are a byproduct of the carding process used on silk fibers to produce silk tops for spinning into yarn. The laps have much more texture than the tops but are similar in staple and length. An industrial drum carder is used to card the silk fibers into silk sliver. When the carder is all matted up (like your hairbrush after combings) the lap is peeled from the drum in a flat sheet. Silk laps are typified by their super long staple. it makes them strong and easy to stretch and divide. They can be stretched to nearly 4 times their size.
The small clusters of silk add wonderful texture to your wet felting, art yarn spinning, silk fusion and mixed media designs; the possibilities are endless! If you are looking to add unique texture to your designs this is a definite must!
Helpful Hint: When working with silk lap it may help to wear surgical gloves. Silk fibers LOVE to attach themselves to dry skin or rough fingernails. I find wearing the gloves helps.
