What to know

What tree is that? How did it get so big? In fact, how big is it? How much does it weigh? And how do you even weigh a tree? These sturdy Tree ID & Biomass Postcards help you and your young learners identify common trees in your neighborhood, and learn how to find their mass. The postcards include a description of a common native tree, and photographs of each tree, its leaves, bark, and fruits or flowers. On the back is a biomass graph for the tree species. All you have to do is measure the diameter of the tree and find the mass with the graph. The deck of ten cards features ten iconic trees of the Northeastern US: Sugar Maple, Red Maple, Shagbark Hickory, American Beech, Sycamore, Black Cherry, Eastern White Pine, White Oak, Northern Red Oak, and Eastern Hemlock. Postcard size 4.25x5.5".

I created these cards to help students of all ages learn to identify the trees in their yard, school, or park - and especially - to help teachers guide students in understanding the way trees create biomass through photosynthesis. Once you know the mass of a tree it is easy to take that measurement one step farther and find out how much carbon dioxide the tree has removed from Earth's atmosphere by photosynthesis. And its so much fun to do!
