The Notre Dame Cathedral was erected on the Île de la Cité, in the heart of Paris, on the site previously occupied by the Carolingian churches of Saint Etienne and Notre Dame.

Its construction began around 1160 under the episcopacy of Maurice de Sully. The works continued until the beginning of the 14th century, undergoing some reforms in the early 18th century and extensively restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, following damages incurred during the Revolution.

The western facade, flanked by two towers of 70 meters (229.66 feet) in height, is one of the most beautiful achievements of French Gothic architecture. At the lower level, three monumental portals open, above which runs a gallery with sculptures of the kings of Judea and Israel. In the center, a large rose window is flanked by paired windows, and this intermediate body is finished by a beautiful arcade over which the upper body of the towers appears.
