This little piece started out on my wheel here in my Pittsboro studio. It was hand carved into this flowing shape during its leather hard stage. It is 3.75 inches tall and glazed with my midnight blue crystalline glaze. The inside is glazed with a clear glaze that takes on the darkness of the crystalline one.

All of the crystalline glazes that I use are original glazes invented myself. Each crystalline glazed piece is unique in that they cannot be duplicated. The crystals are never the same from one piece to another.

I use high fire porcelain, and fire to a peak temperature of 2350°F – aka cone 11. What this means is that the porcelain is fully vitrified and watertight even without the glazes. Because of the way that I fire and the glazes that I use, all my work is fully functional – watertight, lead free, and microwave safe. Dishwashing may etch the glaze surface over time, so I recommend hand washing.
