Every South of the Ocean complete meal contains a minimum of 50% high protein ingredients.
Dried foods are preferred by most crabs and they work much better than fresh in the warm, humid environment hermit crabs need to survive and thrive. Multiple ingredients together provides a foraging opportunity for your crabs and is easily accessible to both small and large crabs. I personally love that my finely ground mixes prevent my boldest crabs from carrying away and guarding all the favorites! With a fine ground texture, even the bashful crabbies get a chance at some of the most coveted ingredients! If your crabs are slow to gobble down the nutrition you offer, grab some nutritious oil (located in the Oils category) and drop a little on the food. The oil melds with their food and you will see them come running to the feast!
Each serving of every South of the Ocean Complete Meal is nutritionally complete and contains one or more ingredients that are not only nutritive but also enhances your crabs' gorgeous color. A serving is 1/3tsp per 3 crabs daily. It is recommended to keep a separate dish of greensand, worm castings, and a calcium source at all times in your crabitat (called The 24/7 in the shop’s Food Staples section).

BRUNSWICK STEW - A great smelling, SOTO classic loved by our crabs! You've probably guessed where I was born and raised....the South. Specifically, I'm from Virginia where this delicious comfort food was first created prior to the Civil War. Brunswick Stew is traditionally made in gigantic cast iron pots (think witches' cauldron) and cooks for hours and hours...and more hours. It's truly a labor of love! I've tweaked this recipe to meet the needs of our hermit crabs (and in WAY smaller quantities!) but I've left all of the love and comfort in each hermie-sized serving!
Ingredients: All organic, wild harvested and/or home grown.
Venison, chicken & bones, pork loin, lima Beans, blue cornmeal, tomatoes, celery, bell peppers, carrots, oyster shell flour.
CAJUN CORN CHOWDER - Another crab favorite, this classic recipe is loved by my human family so I made it into a safe and delicious hermit crab version! My colony LOVES this complete meal. As always with my complete meals, it's nutritiously complete (including calcium!) AND has at least one ingredient which helps enhance their beautiful coloring.
Ingredients: All organic and/or homegrown.
Roasted Pork Loin, blue cornmeal, worm castings, tomatoes, bell peppers, green beans, eggshells, cayenne peppers, extra-virgin, cold pressed, unrefined olive oil.
CHICKEN & BROCCOLI CASSEROLE - is out of retirement and more crab pleasing than ever! Calcium-rich broccoli and swiss chard plus sea lettuce & parsley give this meal a beautiful green color. To enhance your crabs' color, swiss chard is high in beta carotene and Better Than Leaf Litter™ is high in tannins!
Ingredients: All organic, homegrown and/or private land foraged.
Roasted chicken & bones, quinoa, swiss chard, broccoli, sea lettuce, Better Than Leaf Litter™, mulberries, zucchini, parsley.
--NEW!-- HARRY'S CRAB CRAP - This very special meal is a major crab pleaser! It was originally created by a sensational young hermit crab keeper whose devotion to them inspired me to partner with him. Harry and I worked together to include ingredients from the original version and then, he chose additions so it became a nutritionally complete meal! Whenever you see a child working to advocate and keep crabs properly, make sure you tell them how much you appreciate their devotion. Kids are helping change the world for our beloved hermit crabs!
Ingredients: All organic or homegrown. Bunny poop is from organically fed, unvaccinated rabbits.
Organically fed mealworms, bunny poop, blue spirulina infused rolled oats, millet, poppy seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, apples, blueberries.
--NEW!-- IKA MATA - Your crabby crew will clean their plates with this smelly complete meal! Ika Mata is a popular Polynesian dish and translates to "coconut fish". When served to humans, it is a raw, ceviche-style dish. This amazing hermit crab version features whole, wild-caught whiting which has been cooked and dried before grinding.
Ingredients: All organic, homegrown, wild harvested or foraged.
Whole, cooked whiting fish & bones, coconut flour, teff, carrot tops, peas, sea lettuce, celery, oyster shell flour.
All land ingredients are either certified organic, foraged/dispatched from my pesticide-free, private land or sourced from local farmers who are family friends. All sea ingredients are either certified organic or hand-harvested by my husband or me.
Research for full and proper hermit crab nutrition is based on the work of Kilimanjaro’s Hermits and multiple well-respected land hermit crab care organizations of which I am a member. Every South of the Ocean Complete Meal contains the proper amounts of protein(s), vegetables/fruits, harvestables, fat(s), calcium, cellulose, carbohydrates, vitamins, carotenoids, astaxanthin and beta carotene. Items not listed as a "complete meal" do not contain everything needed in the hermit crab diet and you should supplement those items appropriately. South of the Ocean is a Land Hermit Crab Owners’ Society (LHCOS) approved seller.

We are a smoke-free home. Our pets are two rescued pups, one rescued kitty, and 29 hermit crabs who are nearly all rescues (my obsession started like many of us at a beach shop). Please adopt, don’t shop for hermit crabs unless they are captive-bred babies. Let’s work to end the capture and torture of wild hermit crabs!
