Do the duck! Quack, quack! Attention bird watchers, duck hunters, proud Mississippians and ornithological aficianados alike!
These stunning 6cent Wood Duck/Waterfowl Conservation stamps were the first in the annual series that pointed to the need for protecting wildlife. They were first issued in Cleveland, OH on October 24, 1968.
Theses stamps recognized the accomplishments of Ducks Unlimited, an organization that had spent nearly $15 million for waterfowl conservation. Scattered across the prairies were some 900 Ducks Unlimited projects involving roughly a million and a half acres heavily populated with waterfowl. These stamps were designed by Stanley W. Galli of CA.
The wood duck (Aix sponsa) is a medium-sized perching duck. The adult male has distinctive multi-colored iridescent plumage and red eyes. The female, less colorful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both have crested heads. The duck is approximately 19-21" long and weighs 16-30oz.
These beautiful little ducks breed in wooded swamps, shallow lakes, marshes, or ponds in eastern North America and the west coast of the United States. They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water. The wood duck is the only North American duck that regularly produces two broods in one year.
