Signe Persson-Melin SPM (1925–2022), is one of the foremost designers and ceramists in Sweden of all time. She has designed everything from cutlery and spice jars to large public decorations such as the subway in Stockholm.
"Herring in square" (Sill i kvadrat) – first intended as storage for pickled herring – was a huge sales success in Sweden when it was launched in 1968. The reason behind the success was the rustic feel, the shimmering glass and, perhaps mainly, the square shape - inspired by Signe's ceramics. Because of the success more jars, in various sizes and for different contents, was made.
