Is there a permanent solution for copper tarnishing?

Unfortunately, there is no permanent solution for copper tarnish when the pieces are handled or worn on the skin. Copper tarnish on a person is a reaction caused by a person’s body’s pH (acidity) levels. If the copper oxidizes, the tarnish can wear off onto the skin. You can usually wash it off, but it can build up and stain the skin if it is left on the skin.

How do I clean copper or silver jewelry when it's oxidized?

There are two different solutions. For oxidized copper jewelry: Use soapy steel wool and gently rub the jewelry under warm water to remove the tarnish, then gently pad it dry with a towel. For solid copper and sterling silver jewelry: Use 1 tbsp of salt and 2 tbsp of lemon juice in about 5 tbsp of water, mix the ingredients and put your jewelry in the mixture, wait until it brightens. It shouldn't take more than one minute.

Is copper allergenic?

It's uncommon. Copper is a very weak sensitizer compared with other metal compounds. However, in a few selected cases, copper can result in clinically relevant allergic reactions. If you experience redness, itching, swelling, or a rash, with skin blistering or scaling at the site then you are sensitive to copper and should not have it on your skin for a long period of time, or at all.

Liver of sulfur (LOS) is a toxic sulfur product that is a mixture of potassium sulfides. It is commonly used to patina copper and silver.

Is it harmful to wear jewelry treated with Liver of sulfur?

The resulting patina is basically an inert compound and is exactly the same as the normal tarnishing of silver, which is merely accelerated and deepened. Silver or copper will continue to tarnish naturally due to sulfides in the atmosphere and on the skin unless the metals are coated with some sort of protective agent. In short, unless you suffer from a rare form of allergy to sulfur compounds, wearing jewelry treated with liver sulfur is not dangerous.

Is Liver of Sulfur environmentally friendly?

According to all the information we have been able to gather from reliable sources, potassium sulfide has been shown to be harmful to aquatic organisms. For this reason, we will no longer use this chemical from the year 2024 onwards.
