Anoplophora graafi, commonly known as the long-horned beetle, belongs to the Cerambycidae family. Its name derives from the Greek words "anoplo" meaning "unarmed" and "phora" meaning "to bear," referring to its relatively smooth body without prominent projections.
This striking beetle typically measures around 20-35 millimeters in length, characterized by elongated antennae, often exceeding the length of its body. Its coloration varies from dark brown to black, sometimes adorned with spots or stripes, aiding in camouflage amidst trees.
Originally native to East Asia, particularly China, A. graafi has expanded its range due to global trade, becoming an invasive species in Europe and North America. Its larvae bore into various hardwood trees, causing significant damage to forests and urban landscapes.
