Highlights
Is there anything more enticing than a beautiful box? This wooden chest (which dates to the 19th or possibly 18th century) is decorated in the intricate style of Khātam, an ancient Persian technique of inlaying using delicate pieces of wood, metal, bone, and mother of pearl in geometric patterns, like the repeating six point star motif seen here.
The Khātam kari box is in good vintage condition with working hinges and a lid that fits. It has the kind of wear and patina that comes with its antique status (the surface is cracked in some places, corners are chipped, the inner paper lining is aged), but we think this only adds to its extraordinary beauty. The container may have been a scribe's box, because it once featured a working lock, but the lock has been removed. Add a touch of artistry and global flair to your home with this truly one of a kind treasure!
