SUPERB! Appenzell Handmade Table Runner, Butter Color Linen, Swiss Embroidery, Silk Thread, Early 1900s, Antique & Vintage Textiles

An absolutely stunning antique Appenzell table runner with handmade embroidery on butter color linen (it has a beautiful hue of pale yellow)! The handmade Swiss embroidery is breathtaking, executed with silk thread and tiny stitches. The last photo shows the back of the embroidery - that can give you the sense of the highest degree of skills required to make this antique table runner. A masterpiece! The floral motifs in the borders and central part are executed in drawn-thread work, another extremely time-consuming and complex technique which is at the origin of lace-making! This antique Appenzell table runner presents beautiful rural scenes with human figures and animals (I loooove those deers!). A very precious piece, this Appenzell table runner dates to the early 1900s. Condition and other details below. Thank you.

More than a century ago, a person, most likely a woman, spent countless hours leaning over a piece of fabric, tugging a needle to make this embroidered table runner. Searching, acquiring, cleaning and finally offering them a new home is my way of honoring the labour of love of generations of embroiders, weavers and others who devoted themselves to create such fine linens which are becoming extremely rare in today's world.
