Cotton 500m Threads

Medium to lightweight threads are best used with medium-lightweight natural fabrics such as quilting weight cotton and lighter. You may need to reduce sewing machine upper thread tension for best sewing results.

These cotton threads are produced on 500m (approximately 550 yards) spools and are available to purchase separately or as a full set. The full set contains 26 different colours with no repeats.

Made by Sewing Bee Fabrics, these high-quality cotton threads are low lint and low breakage rate. They are both lightweight enough to be used with embroidery machines for beautiful matt finish embroideries, but also strong enough for general sewing use with a sewing machine or when sewing by hand.

So how is this cotton thread both lightweight yet strong? They are made with 3-ply high quality long staple mercerized cotton in 50 weight. Spinning multiple fibres, and the mercerization process helps to add strength while smoothing the cotton fibres so you get less lint and less breakages.

When should you use cotton threads?

For Machine Embroidery:
When embroidering in a matt finish by embroidery machine.
When you don't want to compromise the absorption e.g. when embroidering on cotton towels.
When your embroidery will be laundered at higher temperatures e.g. tea towels
When you want large clothing embroideries to be more breathable.
For Sewing
When sewing with natural fibres like cotton fabric - by matching the fabric type you increase the lifespan of your sewing as the cotton fibres of the thread move and wear in the same way as the fabric. Whereas pairing cotton with stronger polyester threads can pull holes in your cotton fabric over time.
For quilting and quilt piecing - using a lightweight thread that moves the same as your fabric helps to improve piecing accuracy. Please note that if you are quilting a heavier weight wadding you may need a heavier weight thread to match it.
When you want a light and discreet sewing thread and you want to keep your sewing appearance as minimal as possible e.g. discreet top stitching and hems
When your sewing project is designed to come into contact with higher temperatures e.g. oven gloves.
When should you sew with polyester threads instead?
Polyester threads are best used with man-made fabrics like polyester, pvc, PUL, nylon, rayon, neoprene, scuba etc.
When sewing projects will be left outside in all weathers (cotton is natural so over time and repeated rain exposure, will gradually biodegrade).
When seam strength is needed (natural fabrics will need reinforcing with interfacing for this)

Recommended needle size for best use with this thread: 80/12, or 90/14, and #100 topstitch needles.

These threads have been certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. This means that these threads are tested yearly at every stage of production by an independent lab to make sure that these threads do not contain any materials or chemicals which are considered as harmful to health.
