Burel is a 100% wool craft fabric which production follows long lasting traditions. Beautiful rustic texture, perfect for crafts like penny rugs, rug hooking, appliques and sewing projects like pillows, bags, book covers, purses.

COLOUR: Dark pine nut, light rustic brown (natural colours, no dyes)
THICKNESS: 2mm / approx. 0.08"
WEIGHT: 800g/m2 - approx. 23.6oz (heavier than most boiled wool fabrics)
COMPOSITION: 100% wool from Portuguese sheep

CARE:
Burel is a dirt-repelling fabric. Use the wool program in the washing machine. This fabric is pre-shrunk.

SHIPPING: includes tracking and will be made using Portuguese Postal Services (CTT). As such, you'll receive it through your local postal services. There are other shipping options available; please let us know if you are interested.

|PRODUCT DESCRIPTION|

Burel is a boiled pure wool craft fabric produced following time-honoured traditions in the mountainous Serra da Estrela region of Portugal. Used by mountain residents and shepherds, it's somewhat like felt but has a more rustic feel. Unlike regular felt, Burel is both woven and felted, making it tougher and resistant. The edges don't need finishing since it won't unravel. It's also waterproof, fire-resistant, and one of the strongest fabrics globally.

The making process is unique. Wool gets washed, spun, woven, and the wool fabric goes through a process called "pisoagem," where it gets pounded and scalded, similar to felting. In the old days, the final step was letting Burel dry in the sun.

This versatile material meets the demands of various creative endeavours, it’s used for jackets, capes, cardigans, bags, backpacks, belts, berets, and necklaces. Due to its durability, it's perfect for blankets, rugs, pillows, and other home decor projects.

We offer Burel in natural and dyed colours, available in pre-cuts and by the meter.

A thicker Burel is also available in some colours and for large orders.
