Steven "Steve" Rogers, alias Captain America, is a superhero in the Marvel Universe published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby, the fictional character first appeared in the comic book Captain America Comics #1, published in December 1940 but with the date March 1941 printed on the cover.

Originally conceived as an American patriotic figure in reaction to the Nazi regime, the character became active even before the official entry of the United States into World War II in December 1941. From the beginning of his publication, he was perceived as the standard-bearer of his country's democratic values and as a defender of the free world against totalitarianism, notably the Third Reich.

Possessing peak physical condition, Captain America is an unparalleled fighter, a born leader, and an accomplished military strategist. He wears a distinctive costume inspired by the American flag and is equipped with a virtually indestructible shield made of a steel alloy and the fictional vibranium, which he uses both as protection and as a weapon.

Since the 1960s, Captain America has been part of the superhero team the Avengers (and its various versions) of which he has become one of the pillars over the years.

In 2011, Captain America was ranked by the reference site IGN in sixth position in the "Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time"4, in 2012 second in their ranking of the "Top 50 Avengers"5 and in 2014 second in their ranking of the "Top 25 best Marvel superheroes"6.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character of Captain America is portrayed by actor Chris Evans from the film Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) to Avengers: Endgame (2019), at the end of which he tasks the Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie) with continuing his work, the latter slipping into this role at the end of the series Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021).
