Good Meals and How to Prepare Them by Katherine A Fisher, Good Housekeeping Institute, 1929, 8th edition. Hardcover. This is a great old collectible cookbook, nearing 100 years old. Part of its popularity is the visual appeal of the Art Deco style red-and-white check cover - a clever marketing choice by the Good Housekeeping Institute. This cookbook makes a great kitchen display item and is featured in Antique Traders Collectible Cookbooks. It’s an interesting read, providing a glimpse into 1920’s domestic life, for example, “serving luncheon with one or two waitresses”, “substantial afternoon teas” and “a week of menus prepared in the electric range”. Each chapter has a quaint b&w illustration above the title. Condition notes: faded pencil scrawling and a bit of foxing on the front inside cover pages, and foxing here and there throughout. Please note there is a cooking splotch by the lemon pie recipe, and the page after (p.49 and 50) has been torn out and is missing. There are other pages with cooking marks - this cookbook was definitely well used. The back inside cover pages have pencil handwritten recipes, and numerous cooking splotches. General wear to the cover, some fraying and bumping to the corners. Being sold in as is near antique condition. Measures 7.5”x5”.
