Snowy owl necklace: a ceramic spirit animal necklace

This handmade ceramic necklace features a white-silver owl pendant inspired by one of nature’s most mysterious and revered birds. I shaped the pendant from coarse black clay and finished it with a white/silver tone that highlights its rustic texture. Above the owl hangs a matching ceramic bead, and the necklace is completed with small dark matte glass beads on an adjustable black cotton cord with sliding knots for a comfortable fit.

Owls have a dual nature: they are seen as wise and insightful, but also as ominous and associated with death. This duality reflects their real-life characteristics: creatures of the night, silent observers who can see what others cannot.

In ancient Greece, the owl was associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare. The owl, particularly the little owl (Athene noctua), symbolised wisdom, knowledge, and insight. In Roman mythology, her equivalent was Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, healing and the arts.

While the Greeks viewed owls positively, the Romans had a more ambivalent view. They also associated owls with wisdom but saw them as omens of death. An owl predicted the deaths of some emperors.

In Celtic tradition, associated with the Crone, the owl bridged the realms of the living and the dead, guarding hidden knowledge and guiding souls between worlds.

The owl embodies duality: wisdom and mystery; life and death; the seen and the unseen.
It is the silent observer of the night, teaching us to trust our intuition and see beyond surface appearances.
