PU leather—also known as faux leather, vegan leather, synthetic leather, pleather, or artificial leather—is a manmade material crafted to imitate the look and feel of genuine animal leather. Despite the different names, they all refer to the same core concept: a non-animal alternative designed for appearance, not authenticity.

Here’s what it’s made of:
PU leather starts with a base layer of fabric, usually polyester or cotton, and is coated with a layer of polyurethane (PU)—a type of plastic. This plastic coating is what gives the material its signature shine, texture, and durability. Depending on the style, the surface might be embossed with patterns to mimic the grain of real hide—but it’s all an illusion. The texture is smooth to the touch and completely synthetic.

I specifically use pleather in my designs because it holds detailed prints beautifully. Unlike animal leather, pleather can be printed edge to edge with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. That means every bag, wallet, or accessory becomes a unique canvas for bold, artistic designs.
