The gardens at Powerscourt were alive with color, the air thick with the scent of flowers, and the sounds of water trickling from nearby fountains. My husband and I were honeymooning, casually wandering the lush, saturated green grounds of Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains. My intention was to take in the beauty as a tourist, snapping a few photos along the way to remember our day. I began shooting from different angles, maneuvering around branches, flowers, and crowds. A European robin, perched high in the branches, singing its heart out. The little bird seemed so joyful, oblivious to the world around it. I quickly raised my camera to my eye, adjusting the settings to capture the moment. The robin didn’t flinch, didn’t fly away. It stayed there, like it was waiting for its portrait to be taken.
