Unusual 1920s Gold Lamé and Chenille Embroidery Handbag, Metal Frame, Gold Chain Handle, Floral Crepe Lining, Will Fit Phone

People often ask me how I choose things for the shop. I don't buy everything, far from it. It has to evoke a reaction and have something about it that either excites or intrigues me. If I don't have that reaction, I don't buy it.

This handbag is certainly a case in point. I have never seen anything like it. I spotted it at distance and I had to go over and check it out. I am so pleased I did. If you like the artisan or serious craft item, this would probably intrigue you as well. It has a gilt metal frame with floral detail and a carved kiss clasp. it has a little gold chain handle. The interior is lined with a floral crepe fabric. It is the exterior of the bag that is most interesting.

The body of the bag is embroidered. The background is embroidered with a gold lamè yarn. Yes, lamè. It has tarnished a bit so looks more bronze than gold but there is still that metallic sparkle in certain lights. ~The design is embroidered with chenille in navy and sky blue, moss and forest green, olive, taupe and raw siena. I am not sure what it is but it looks forest starting with the tops of the tress at the bottom of the bag. There is definitely leaf detail. Each side has the same arrangement but in different colours. It is possible the outer of the bag was fashioned from something else, something older. It is earthy, crafty, and slightly abstract but quite lovely. It's also very different.

It measures 8 inches (20cm) wide x 6.5 inches (16.5cm) tall and the handle adds another 5 inches (12.5 cm) height.

Structurally, the bag is in very good, sound condition. As mentioned, the lamè has tarnished but not unpleasantly so. Some of the chenille has worn away leaving small spots of the embroidery web underneath but it is not obvious and in a way adds to that craftiness. The interior is clean and intact.
