The Madonna del Ghisallo is a revered sanctuary in Lombardy, Italy, associated with cyclists. Legend tells of Count Ghisallo, saved from bandits by the Virgin Mary at the Ghisallo Pass, leading to the shrine becoming a symbol of protection for travelers. In 1949, Pope Pius XII declared the Madonna the patron saint of cyclists!

Today, the sanctuary houses cycling memorabilia and attracts cyclists from around the world, who seek blessings for safe journeys. The Ghisallo Pass is also featured in major races like the Giro d’Italia and ILombardia, cementing its importance in cycling culture.

In 2024 Tadej Pogacar obliterated the field to win his fourth Il Lombardia in a row and claim his 25th victory of the season. The Slovenian star, who became World Champion a few weeks before sporting his new rainbow stripes kit, powered away from the peloton with just over 48km to go and finished 3min 16sec ahead of Remco Evenepoel in second. The race is the last cycling monument of the season taking place in the autumn and it has become known as "the race of the falling leaves".
