Oaxacan Green Dent Corn
95 days — Originating from the Oaxacan region of Mexico, the Oaxacan green corn (Oaxacan green dent corn) is an heirloom variety grown for its beauty and culinary usage in the kitchen. Green colored corn kernels are actually fairly uncommon, making this variety very popular with market growers who sell the dried ears for their ornamental value. For centuries local Oaxacan cultivated this corn to grind into flour to make tortillas and also to feed their livestock. Nowadays this can be used for food or for ornamental decoration. These will produce 8-12 inch long ears of corn.

The corn is a brilliant monochromatic spectrum of green hues. Stalks can reach 6-10 ft. As with most corn, this can be used for growing the 3 sisters method of gardening. When you plant your corn first, the stalks will begin to grow, you plant squash/pumpkins, and beans at the base of the corn. The corn will act as a trellis for the beans, and the corn stalks protect the leaves and fruit of your squash/pumpkins. This 3 sisters method of planting was started by the native Americans. This is a very effective way of successfully growing 3 different varieties in a small amount of space. Its stalks are vigorous and reach about seven feet in height. Great for corn flour, corn meal, tortillas and tamales!

Oaxacan green corn is beneficial to those with shorter growing seasons as it matures considerably faster than most other dent corn varieties. For pollination purposes, these do best in rows, small clusters, or planting blocks.
