Seller's description

Queen of the Sea and the Otter Saint: Protectress of Seas and Oceans and all life therein. I endeavor in many of my Modern Icons to connect attributes we normally associate with ourselves, to those of our fellow creatures who inhabit this planet. As we would like to envision the Queen of the Sea looking after us as we swim or sail upon the waters, so too She tenderly does hold the Sea Otter. The Otter is also a Saint, a word we associate with holiness, and they are. No unkind word from them, only joyful living and delight among the seaweeds that are their homes. Very family oriented and playful, their favorite food the sea urchin. They live all their lives on the water. They look to us to care for how we treat the oceans and seas, their only home. It is my intention to create a new idea of who animals are. They are not other, they inhabit bodies that feel all that we feel, and enjoy the world and its beauty like we do. Nature provides them with all that they require and as far as I know they do not yearn for more. The Queen is patterned after the Renaissance Queen Elizabeth I. She was a Queen of the Sea in her own right.

Large Icon on Wood and Masonitel is @ 11.5x 6.75" and Small Icon is @6.25x 4.5", either can be placed on stand or hung through decorative hole at top, some people like to add a ribbon to hang it from, but a simple steel nail will do the trick.

This icon is a marvel...reverent and whimsical at the same time. The Queen of the Sea crowned with shells, the otter (so lifelike) standing on a sea urchin...this both enlarges my sense of the holy and charms my imagination. The colors are vivid and true. Even more beautiful than the image online.
