Most vintage shoes have plastic heel tips. The plastic degrades over time, and this is not always visible. Sometimes they gain a white coating, which is another indication that they have degraded. Always consider reheeling as a matter of course, as the heel tips will either crumble or break off. Court shoes leave behind a metal screw Older vintage shoes may well have a leather heel tip, so will not wear in the same way. You can always ask your local cobbler if they can replace like with like. Please don’t leave heel tips until they are totally worn down, replace them before the heel becomes damaged as well.

I love all leather shoes, but leather soles need to be looked after, too. If the shoes have never been worn, score a criss-cross pattern across the soles to rough them up a little and give them some grip. Always wear them in the dry for the first few times to finish the job of the scissors! If you want an all weather sole, ask your cobbler to put a thin stick-a-sole over the leather sole to give them a longer life and protect them against being too wet. Keep an eye on the toe tips, as these are the most likely place where you’ll get most obvious wear, and your cobbler can just replace the toe area of the sole.
