Highlights
Many have compared the modern United States with the end of the Roman Empire, at least the western portion, as an attempt to project America’s fall. As Professor Madden points out, “Anyone with even a passing acquaintance with the history of the late Roman Empire knows that it bears almost no similarities with the modern United States.” It is rather to the young Roman Republic to which Professor Madden makes a comparison. He sees “similarities in culture, self-image, national character, and a host of other factors” as striking and worth examining.
Thomas F. Madden is Professor of History and Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Saint Louis University. As an author and historical consultant, he appears in such venues as The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and The History Channel. Professor Madden is a leading scholar of Ancient and Medieval History, the Crusades, and the Renaissance.
The interior of the original is faithfully reproduced, page by page. Our craftspeople create a volume of uncommon quality and durability using methods employed for centuries. Every volume is fully bound in leather and embellished with an original design stamped in gold. The raised bands across the spine are distinctive of the classic bookmaker’s art. Colorful endleaves are reminiscent of fine Old World editions. Coordinating headbands grace both ends of the spine and add strength. The acid-free leaves are Smyth-sewn, their edges gilded for additional protection and elegance. A satin ribbon marker ensures easy reference. For the discriminating collector, Gryphon Editions enrich a home or office while providing a lifetime of intellectual stimulation. They make perfect birthday presents, graduation gifts, and one-of-a-kind gifts for any occasion!
