Handmade Dorset style buttons, needle woven buttons, hand woven fiberbuttons, lightweight buttons, vintage style buttons, needle weaving, fiber buttons, set of two

These larger buttons have been handwoven using a needle and 100% DMC cotton and backed with thick felt. They measure 1 1/2" in diameter and the reverse side can be attach to a garment with a safety pin or be sewn onto an item.

So, what is a Dorset button? Dorset buttons were handmade in England in the 1600's through to 1851 when the invention of a button making machine was the beginning of their demise. During this time, a woman would make and sell these to bring in extra money to her household. A very good weaver could make up to 18 buttons a day. This became a small industry as there was a large demand for this hand work. The buttons were made from cotton thread with different patterns and used for garments.

In the United States, there has been a resurgence in demand for handmade items, including the Dorset buttons and the shirtlace buttons which are not the same as a Dorset button but are also hand woven in similar fashion. These have so many uses:

Use on headbands or head wraps or other hair accessories for children and adults.

Attach to shoelaces, tote bags and purses.

Attach to a lapel on a coat or to close a shawl.

Use them in jewelry such as earrings, pins, chokers, statements necklaces, bracelets or as medallions. I recently saw several statement necklaces made from a mix of these buttons, which varied in pattern, colors and size. Striking!

Use as an accent for children's hats.


I have other designs, color combinations and sizes in my shop, listed separately. These buttons are made around a plastic ring. They are washable but cannot go in the dryer. Hand washing and air drying is a preferred method to insure durability.
