This pendant features three cut aquamarines from a closed mine in Rwanda. This piece in total measures 1.6 inches (40.5 cm) in length. It is set in sterling silver.

Aquamarine is a gem in the beryl family, cousin to rich green Emerald, golden-yellow Heliodor and pink Morganite. While it is often thought of as purely blue, aquamarine usually comes out of the ground with a variable green tint, which is often removed by heating. However, with the advent of cheap irradiated blue topaz having flooded the market, the natural green-tinged colors are finally being appreciated.

I'm quite excited to offer these stones, as they are from a relatively new mine which was discovered a few years back in Rwanda. It produces some more normal aquamarine, but many of the stones are a beautiful green with a hazy translucency, which gives them an almost opalescent character. I purchased a parcel of rough and had some cut into cabochons and others into faceted stones, with both styles showing off this stone's unique beauty. They're not the sort of aquamarines which are typically seen in jewelry, but they represent a lovely and untreated variant from the norm.
